Most of the essays we read so far have had a recurrent theme: an individual’s attempt to negotiate a more or less stable sense of identity while navigating between the security of belonging (sameness), which necessarily involves conformity with group values, and the risks of uncertainty/confusion when those group values/norms become stifling or downright oppresive to our process of becoming existentially responsible human beings. Many of us also inhabit cultural communities that are at odds with one another, which can also be a source of conflict, and calls for a balancing act on a hyphen to connect them.

I realize that I am not giving you a specific “prompt” or a specific question that demands an answer. I am just inviting you to share some thoughts, experiences, insights on this broad topic, hoping to initiate a conversation.
